Sermeh-douzi
A Persian embroidery tradition, worked by hand into every piece.
What Sermeh is
Sermeh-douzi is a form of metal-thread embroidery practised in Iran for centuries. Fine metallic wire is wound into a tight spring, cut into short lengths, and stitched one length at a time onto fabric — most often velvet, because the pile holds the metal and gives it a dark ground to shine against. The coils catch light from every angle, so the work changes as the wearer moves. It is slow work: a single bow tie face can take hours.
How each piece is made
Every Noorarash piece begins as cut velvet. The pattern is worked by hand in metallic thread and beadwork, then a genuine gemstone is set at the centre and the piece is assembled and finished. Because all of this is done by hand, one at a time, no two pieces are identical — and once a piece sells, that exact piece is gone.
Caring for your piece
- Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight
- Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth
- Do not machine wash or soak
- Keep away from perfume and harsh chemicals — they dull metallic thread
